BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 18 Virginia Tech Hokies fell to No. 5 Florida State 4-1 in game one Thursday evening. The Hokies had bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with two outs but were unable to complete the comeback.
Sophomore Emma Lemley (19-7) started and took the loss in the circle for Virginia Tech (33-13, 12-7). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on nine hits, allowing two walks and striking out four.
Fagan's three-hit day led the Hokies offensively, going 3-for-4 with three singles. Junior Addy Greene put together a solid effort as well, going 1-for-2 with a single and two walks. Senior Kelsey Brown also helped out for Virginia Tech, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Seminoles capitalized on a Hokie error in the second inning, followed by two doubles from Kalei Harding and Mack Leonard in the 5th. An RBI single from Devyn Flaherty scored the final run for Florida State. Trailing 4-0, the Hokies first put runs on the board in the sixth inning. Fagan came across to score the lone run of the inning for Virginia Tech off a sacrifice fly from Bre Peck. The Hokies loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but a fly out to right field would end the game.
GAME NOTES
» Fagan led the Hokies, picking up three base knocks in the ballgame.
» Virginia Tech pitchers limited Florida State to just 2-for-10 (.200) with runners in scoring position.
» Florida State was led offensively by senior Kaley Mudge, who went 2-for-4 with a double.
» Senior Kathryn Sandercock led the Seminoles pitching staff, throwing six innings of one-run ball.
Game two between the Hokies and the Seminoles is set for Friday at 6 p.m.
