 SERIES HISTORY

  • Virginia Tech is seeking its first series victory against Florida State since the 2017 season. The Hokies are pursuing their first true road series win against the Seminoles at Dick Howser Stadium since 2010.
  • Under head coach John Szefc, the Hokies are 2-4 against Florida State, having been walked off during the teams' 2019 opener in Tallahassee (held 8-6 lead during the 10th inning).
  • Including his head coaching tenure at Maryland, John Szefc has won weekend series against all but two current ACC opponents – Clemson and Florida State. After visiting the Seminoles this weekend, the Hokies will soon entertain the Tigers at English Field between May 12 and May 14. Szefc's pursuit includes Tech's one-game series win at Notre Dame in March 2022 (remainder of series canceled due to weather).
  • Virginia Tech is playing for its ACC road series win of the 2023 season. The Hokies' last conference road series victory was earned in April 2022 when Tech – ranked No. 7 – defeated No. 11 Virginia in Charlottesville.

HAMMERIN' HEADLINES

  • Junior outfielder Jack Hurley enters this weekend's series at Florida State riding a 17-game hitting streak. Hurley – who set the Virginia Tech ACC-era record with his 26-game, season-opening hitting streak at the beginning of the 2022 campaign – has homered during 11 of his last 14 games.
  • Sophomore right-hander Drue Hackenberg has won two consecutive starts, having collected victories at Duke (April 9) and against Georgia Tech (April 16). Considering his last two starts, Hackenberg has allowed two runs (one earned) across 14 innings pitched, registering 17 strikeouts and four walks.
  • Fifth-year infielder David Bryant has made three consecutive starts at third base with sophomore Carson DeMartini making two appearances as designated hitter. During Sunday's sweep-clinching win against Georgia Tech, Bryant homered twice for his first career multi-homer performance, matching his career high of four RBIs (set first during his 2022 season at Radford).
  • Redshirt-sophomore reliever Brady Kirtner made two appearances during Tech's three-game sweep of Georgia Tech. Kirtner combined to strike out eight of the 12 batters he faced, logging three scoreless innings while allowing two hits.
  • Virginia Tech ranks fifth among NCAA Division I programs in fielding percentage (.983) and seventh in slugging percentage (.559), leading the ACC in both categories. Offensively, the Hokies rank 11th nationally in scoring (9.1 runs per game) and eighth in home runs per game (1.97).
