Hokie ClubCary, N.C. – Virginia Tech (10-14, 1-12) had it's ACC Championship run ended by No. 42 Clemson, 4-3, early Wednesday afternoon.
It was a beautiful sunny day at the Cary Tennis Center with the Hokies looking to avenge a 4-3 defeat at the hands of the Tigers in Blacksburg back in March.
Tech came out firing on all cylinders in doubles with Katie Andreini and Semra Aksu cruising to a 6-2 victory on court one. It was more of the same for Erika Cheng and Katie Andreini on court two punctuating their 6-2 win with a beautiful shot down the line to put the Hokies up 1-0.
Clemson flipped the switch in singles jumping ahead 2-1 after wins on courts one and four in straight-sets. Andreini responded with a straight-set victory of her own and a fist bump from head coach Terry-Ann Zawacki to tie the match up.
The Tigers kept applying pressure claiming two more victories in straight-sets to put Tech's backs against the wall. Charlotte Cartledge answered the bell defeating Leigh Van Zyl, 6-4, 6-3, putting all eyes on court three to decide the match.
Semra Aksu battled back after a crushing opening set defeat in a tiebreak to win the second set in commanding fashion, 6-2, setting up a massive third set. The Izmir, Turkey native earned the first game and was trading points back and forth with Jenna Thompson but ultimately didn't have enough as she fell 6-4 in the final set to put Clemson into the next round.
