Virginia Tech lacrosse honors seniors

BLACKSBURG – Prior to Saturday's game, Virginia Tech honored seven student-athletes as part of its Senior Day ceremony. Graduate students Lizzie Lohrer and Jordan Tilley were recognized, along with seniors Riley Hayden, Jacelyn Lazore, Kayla Frank, Hannah Mardiney and Michaela McCarthy.

#6 Michaela McCarthy
Defender
Rockville, Md.


A two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member, Michaela is graduating with a degree in Public Relations. As a student-athlete at Tech, she was a representative and writer for Uncut Blacksburg, a story-telling platform for student-athletes. As a junior and senior, Michaela participated in Virginia Tech's Next Level Leadership program, which helps student-athletes cultivate leadership skills to take to their teams and workplace. Her favorite memories from her time at Tech include beating UVa and JMU on the road, along with gamedays in Lane Stadium with her teammates and friends.

 

#17 Jordan Tilley
Defender
Baltimore, Md.


Tilley has appeared in 75 games for the Hokies over the last five seasons. She's currently tied for 4th in program history for caused turnovers in a career with 82, while ranking 10th all-time in ground balls with 113. A four-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member, Jordan will graduate with her Master's degree in Public Health. After serving for one year as a representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, she has been the vice president of the organization for the last two years, while serving as the co-chair for the committee's diversity and inclusion task force. Jordan also serves as a student representative for the Claire Marie foundation, which raises awareness for adolescent melanoma. Her favorite memories as a Hokie include beating JMU for the first time in program history, the team trip to Coastal Carolina last season and Christmas caroling around the athletic facility this past winter. 

 

#18 Riley Hayden
Defender
South Riding, Va.


A two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member, Riley will graduate with a degree in Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise. She has served as the team's outreach representative for the last two years, coordinating team community service events such as the canned food drive with Micah's Backpack, the Special Olympics, Hokie for a Day and Team Impact. Riley also served as the team's representative for Morgan's Message, an organization that aims to end the stigma surrounding mental health and student-athletes. As a HokieHiFive leader, she acts a mentor for freshman entering the HNFE program at Tech. Riley's favorite memories of her career include last year's win over JMU and this season's triple overtime win over Duke, along with the annual Derby Day and Christmas party with her teammates.

 

#19 Jacelyn Lazore
Attacker

Akwesasne Nation, N.Y.

Lazore has 15 goals and 10 assists in 27 games for the Hokies. A three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member, she will graduate with a degree in Residential Environment and Design. Jacelyn has participated in the Next Level Leadership program since her sophomore year and is a member of the American Indian Sciences and Engineering Society, an organization that promotes representation of indigenous people in STEM fields. She served as the social media manager for Native at VT and has been heavily involved in creating a family-oriented environment for Native and Indigenous students at Virginia Tech. Her favorite memories include the team's big wins over JMU and Duke, jumping to Enter Sandman before games and living in the Green Street house with her teammates.

 

#26 Hannah Mardiney
Attacker

Lutherville, Md.

Mardiney has 31 goals and 12 assists in two seasons with the Hokies. For her career, she's scored 43 goals and registered 29 assists in 63 games. A member of the 2022 ACC Academic Honor Roll, Hannah will graduate with a degree in Human Development. Since joining the Hokies ahead of the 2022 season, she's had nine multi-goal games, including a three-goal, three-assist performance against VCU last year. Off the field, she serves as the team's unofficial wedding officiant, Lunch Pail Lane president and works in the training room. Hannah cites football games and being reunited with her childhood friend Jordan Tilley, along with the team's triple overtime win against Duke as her favorite memories at Tech.

 

#32 Lizzie Lohrer
Defender

Alexandria, Va.

Lohrer has appeared in 60 games for the Hokies since 2019. She owns 51 ground balls and 35 caused turnovers in her career at Tech. A three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member, Lizzie is graduating with a Master's degree in Agriculture and Applied Economics after earning her Bachelor's in finance last spring. Her favorite memories from her time in Blacksburg include traveling to California and Canada her freshman year, beating JMU and Notre Dame last season, watching Jordan Tilley score her first career goal earlier this season and being named a team captain. Lizzie will miss going to different Virginia Tech games and supporting her fellow Hokies.

 

#45 Kayla Frank
Midfielder

Moorestown, N.J.

Frank has 46 goals and 38 assists in 42 games at Virginia Tech. In her freshman season, she earned All-American and All-Rookie team honors from Inside Lacrosse, while leading all freshman in the country in points scored with 45. Kayla set the record for most assists in a single-game in Virginia Tech history in 2020 when she had eight assists against Radford. A two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member, she will graduate with a degree in Sports Media and Analytics. Off the field, Kayla serves as the team's social chair. Her favorite memories from her time at Virginia Tech include celebrating the triple overtime win against Duke, getting hype in the locker room before games, football gamedays and getting to live with Hannah Mardiney.
