No. 14/17 Hokies fight back from fifth-inning deficit, defeat Notre Dame 8-7

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The No. 14 Virginia Tech Hokies fought back from down 7-5 in the fifth inning to beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 8-7 Saturday in game one of the doubleheader.

Sophomore Molly Jacobson (5-2) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Virginia Tech (32-12, 12-5). The right-hander went four innings, giving up one run on seven hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Sophomore Emma Lemley also made an impact in the circle for the Hokies, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with one walk and two strikeouts to earn her third save of the season.

Sophomore Bre Peck led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 3-for-3 in the ballgame with a double, two home runs and three RBI. Junior Cameron Fagan added a home run and an RBI. Junior Addy Greene also contributed  with a home run and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got the scoring started early, putting four runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Virginia Tech hit three home runs in the inning on the way to taking a 4-0 lead.

The Fighting Irish then rallied to score six runs and take a 6-4 lead, plating one in the first and five in the second, before the Hokies got back on the board in the third. Virginia Tech picked up a run on Peck's two-out solo home run off of freshman Micaela Kastor, which brought the score to 6-5 in favor of the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame built their lead to 7-5 before the Virginia Tech offense got back to work, overtaking the Fighting Irish to grab an 8-7 advantage in the sixth. The Hokies picked up three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-RBI double from senior Kelsey Bennett. The score remained 8-7 for the rest of the game, as Virginia Tech held on for the win.
