No. 14/17 Virginia Tech drops game three to Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Sophomore Rachel Castine went 1-for-1 with two RBI for the No. 14 Virginia Tech Hokies in an 11-3 (5) loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday.

Sophomore Emma Lemley (19-6) got the ball to start for Virginia Tech (32-12, 12-6) and took the loss. She gave up five runs on eight hits.

Castine led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 1-for-1 in the ballgame with a walk and two RBI. Junior Addy Greene put together a solid performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Bre Peck also contributed, going 1-for-2 for Virginia Tech with a double and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies were trailing 1-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Castine drove in two runs for Virginia Tech with a single that scored senior Jayme Bailey and Peck.

The Fighting Irish then rallied to score four runs and take a 5-2 lead before the Hokies got back on the board in the fifth. Virginia Tech scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Greene, which tightened the Fighting Irish lead to 5-3. Notre Dame then plated six runs in the bottom half of the fifth to end the game in five innings.

GAME NOTES
» Castine led the Hokies at the plate, going 1-for-1 with two RBI.
» Notre Dame was led offensively by senior Joley Mitchell, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI.
» Senior Payton Tidd led the Fighting Irish pitching staff, throwing five innings of three-run ball.

The Hokies are back in action on Tuesday, hosting Radford at 6 p.m. at Tech Softball Park.
