CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Kobe Valociek fired a 3-under 210 to tie for 15th and lead the Virginia Tech men's golf team at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial, which concluded Tuesday afternoon at Birdwood Golf Course (par 71, 7,116 yards).
The Peoria, Ariz., native combined for 10 birdies and a hole-in-one during his 54 holes of competition. Valociek's hole-in-one came at the par-3 17th, his second hole of the first round, to quickly put him at 2-under-par. The junior finished his opening round at 3-under 68. Valociek backed that performance with a pair of 71s to finish at 210 and a tie for 15th – his second top-20 of the season.
Charlie Hanson paced the Hokies with a team-best 14 birdies en route to tying for 26th at even-par 213 (68-73-72). In addition to Valociek and Hanson, Drew Brockwell also carded a round in the 60s during Monday's opening round. Brockwell signed for a season-best, 2-under 69 to open the tournament. He finished in a tie for 38th at 2-over 215.
No. 7 Florida State led wire-to-wire in its 14-shot victory over No. 21 Virginia, which was hosting the two-day event. The Seminoles fired an impressive 41-under 811 (264-274-273) to easily win the team race over the Cavaliers (825). Tech placed ninth at 5-over 857 (278-290-289).
Ben James of UVA and Cole Anderson of Florida State shared medalist honors at 11-under 202.
