SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Behind five goals from Meaghan Tyrrell, No. 2 Syracuse downed Virginia Tech, 16-5, on Sunday in the JMA Wireless Dome.
Olivia Vergano and Blair Guy teamed up to score four of Tech's five goals in the Hokies' second game in a row against a top-2 opponent. Hannah Mardiney netted her fifth goal of the season, as well.
Virginia Tech got off to a strong start in the game, with a 10-6 advantage in shots in the first quarter. Despite controlling possession for a solid amount of time, the Hokies trailed 2-1 after the first 15 minutes.
The second period was when the Orange asserted their dominance, as they turned six draw controls into six goals.
Tech looked much sharper coming out of the halftime break and matched the second-ranked hosts goal-for-goal in the third quarter. Guy, Vergano and Mardiney each added to their tallies in the third.
With an 11-4 lead heading into the final 15 minutes, Syracuse extended their lead with five more goals and locked up a 16-5 result.
Virginia Tech's Jocelyn Torres made eight saves in the game.
