Hokies wrap up regular season in Cassell on Saturday against Florida State

BLACKSBURG – Riding momentum from its Tuesday night win at Louisville, Virginia Tech wraps up its regular season at home on Saturday afternoon against Florida State. Dave O'Brien and Cory Alexander will be on the call at 4 p.m. for ESPN2, while Zach Mackey and Mike Burnop will provide coverage for the Virginia Tech Sports Network.

Hunter Cattoor, Justyn Mutts and three managers will be honored prior to Saturday's game. Fans are encouraged to arrive early. Senior Day festivities will begin around 3:30 p.m. Halftime will feature the Virginia529 Diaper Derby.

SCOUTING THE SEMINOLES

  • Florida State fell to North Carolina, 77-66, in its last outing on Monday. Caleb Mills paced the scoring for the Seminoles with a game-high 19 points on 8-16 shooting from the floor. 
  • The 'Noles have had a tough run in ACC play after getting out to a 5-4 start. Since defeating Pitt on Jan. 21, FSU is 2-8 in conference games.
  • Matthew Cleveland leads the Seminoles in scoring with 14.2 points per game, along with averaging 7.7 boards.
  • In typical Florida State fashion, the team's entire rotation (played in 20+ games this season) stands at 6-5 or taller.

The Series

  • Tech defeated Florida State, 85-72, last season for its first win in Tallahassee since Feb. 24, 1990 (84-74). 
  • The Seminoles lead the all-time series, 36-22, despite seeing their six-game winning streak in the series snapped a year ago. 
  • The first game of the series was played on Dec. 14, 1968 in Blacksburg - a 77-74 win for the Hokies. 
  • Tech will be seeking its first win over FSU in Blacksburg since Feb. 20, 2016 (83-73). The Hokies are 14-11 all-time against the Seminoles at home. 
  • Mike Young is 1-1 vs. FSU. The two sides did not meet during the 2020-21 season. 

HOKIE HEADLINES

  • Grant Basile has scored double figures in 14 straight games. He has broken the 20-point mark in six of the last 11 contests. Over the last 11 games, Basile is averaging 21.4 ppg. 
  • Basile (seventh) and Sean Pedulla (16th) give the Hokies two of the top 16 scorers in the ACC. 
  • Hunter Cattoor is first in the league in 3FG% at 42.4% (67-158). 
  • The Hokies pulled down a season-high 18 offensive rebounds at Louisville, led by Justyn Mutts' seven. 
  • They also delivered 16 assists vs. five turnovers against the Cardinals. 

SENIOR DAY ON SATURDAY

  • Tech will be recognizing seniors Hunter Cattoor and Justyn Mutts prior to Saturday's game vs. Florida State. 
  • In addition, the Hokies' three senior managers will be honored: Scott Ferris, Rob Fraley and Calvin Lawyer. 
  • As is tradition, Tech will put the numbers of Cattoor and Mutts, along with the initials of Ferris, Fraley and Lawyer at halfcourt for Saturday's game.
