No. 12/16 Hokies record 9-5 victory over Liberty

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 12/16 Virginia Tech softball team recorded a 9-5 victory over the Liberty Flames Wednesay evening, marking three straight wins over Liberty. 

Sophomore Emma Lemley struck out eight Liberty hitters over seven innings of work to earn her 16th win of the season. Lemley (16-2) went seven innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits and walking three for Virginia Tech (26-6).

Offensively, the Hokies were led by junior Addy Greene, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a home run and three RBI. Junior Cameron Fagan put together a solid performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, a walk and two RBI. Senior Jayme Bailey also chipped in for Virginia Tech, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. Virginia Tech scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Bailey.

The Flames then tied the ballgame at three off a three-run home run before the Hokies came back to reclaim their advantage in the fifth inning. Virginia Tech plated two runs off of Liberty pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Greene, which brought the Hokies lead to 5-3.

Liberty narrowed Virginia Tech's lead to 5-4 before the Hokies stretched the advantage to 9-4 in the sixth inning. The Hokies hit two home runs, one from Fagan and one from Greene, in the inning on the way to scoring four runs. Liberty put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Virginia Tech took the 9-5 win.
