EMMITSBURG, Md. – Virginia Tech earned its second double-digit win in as many games on Wednesday afternoon, as the Hokies downed Mount St. Mary's, 17-5.
Olivia Vergano led the Hokies in scoring with five goals, marking a season high and her fifth game of the season with 3+ goals.
Kayla Frank had her second game in a row with a hat trick, netting three goals in the first half. Frank and Vergano were joined by Maura O'Malley, Claire Schotta and Lauren Render in the multi-goal category.
As was the case last Saturday against Akron, Tech controlled the game in the circle, as Sarah Gresham set the Hokies up for success by winning four draw controls.
Wednesday's game look destined to be a defensive matchup, as the teams were tied 1-1 through 13 minutes of play. However, Tech went on a 6-0 between 1:15 in the first quarter and 13:40 in the second quarter to take a 7-1 lead.
The Hokies put 27 of 34 shots on goal, which is the third most this season.
Ten different Tech players recorded points, including Mary Griffin, who registered her first career assist in the game.
Virginia Tech allowed one goal apiece in the first three quarters before allowing two in the fourth. With an 11-2 advantage at halftime, Tech posted its second-highest lead of the season at the halfway point.
For the second game in a row, Jocelyn Torres wasn't called upon too much in cage, making five saves. Lilly Kannapell earned her third appearance of the season in the fourth quarter of the game.
Tech will now shift its focus to No. 7 Boston College on Saturday in Blacksburg, Va.
