This past weekend was an exciting time to be a Hokie, as the Virginia Tech women's basketball team won both of its games in the friendly confines of Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum.
Tech defeated Chattanooga on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and followed it up with a victory over South Dakota State Sunday to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999 (P.S., gas was $1.17 a gallon then).
In front of a sold-out crowd for both games, the Hokies (29-4) set numerous milestones in their record book. We break down the records that fell in Blacksburg, as part of Virginia Tech Athletics' Writing HERstory campaign, in partnership with Truist.
Block Party
Center Elizabeth Kitley, who has collected a bunch of All-America honors in recent weeks, notched another record to her impressive résumé, totaling 261 blocks in her career to now rank No. 1 all-time at Tech.
The North Carolina native accomplished the feat midway through the second quarter against South Dakota State, passing Ieva Kublina's (2000-04) 256 career blocks.
Home Sweet Home
Cassell Coliseum has always been a special place, but that home-court advantage has never been felt greater than this year. Head coach Kenny Brooks mentioned multiple times throughout the season that Hokie Nation at home makes a good team a great team, and that proved true, as Tech went 16-1 at home.
The 16 home wins marked the highest win total at Cassell in school history. The previous high was 15 wins at home accomplished three different times.
The win on Sunday was also the 29th of the season, a new program record surpassing the 28 notched by the 1998-99 team.
Hot From Downtown
There aren't a lot of players in America who are playing better basketball than Tech's very own Georgia Amoore. The Australian has had the hot hand from 3, averaging 5.2 3-pointers made per game over her last five outings (26 total). ACC Network's Kelly Gramlich even stated that Amoore is 'just unconscious' recently and is playing at an elite level.
Amoore became the school's all-time leader in triples made in a single season, hitting her 97th career 3-pointer during the second quarter versus Chattanooga to pass Aisha Sheppard's 2021-22 season's mark of 96.
Tech will now head to the Sweet 16 this upcoming weekend and looks to keep breaking records, one milestone at a time.
