Five Hokies qualify for NCAA Women’s Championships

BLACKSBURG – The No. 22 Hokie women had five swimmers qualify for the 2023 Women's NCAA Championships, the NCAA announced on Wednesday. 

The women selected include Emma Atkinson (200 free, 500 free, 200 back), Caroline Bentz (200 back), Sarah Shackelford (100 free), Chase Travis (1650 free) and Carmen Weiler Sastre (200 back, 200 free). 

Last year, Atkinson, Bentz, Shackelford and Travis competed at the NCAA Championships. Atkinson placed fourth in the 200 back, earning All-American honors and swimming a new school record. She also earned All-American honorable mention in the 200 free. Travis swam a personal best in the 500 free during the second day of competition last year and Shackelford swam a personal best in the 50 free. 

Freshman Weiler Sastre will be making her first appearance at the championship meet.

Madelyn Moore and Emily Claesson will travel with the team as relay alternatives. 

The Hokie divers will compete at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships March 6-8 to determine who will compete with our swimmers at NCAA Championships. 

The 2023 Women's NCAA Championships will be held in Knoxville, Tenn. beginning March 15 and concluding on March 18.

The Hokie men will compete on Saturday during a last chance meet to obtain qualifying times for the men's NCAA Championships at the end of March.
