12-strikeout showing from Lemley leads Virginia Tech over North Carolina 3-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 11/13 Virginia Tech softball team clinched its second ACC series of the season, defeating North Carolina 3-1Sophomore Emma Lemley took the win, striking out 12 North Carolina hitters over seven innings of work to help power the Hokies over the Tar Heels.

In addition to her 12 strikeouts, Lemley (12-1) threw seven innings, giving up one run on five hits and walking one for Virginia Tech (19-5, 5-1).

Sophomore Bre Peck led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a double and an RBI. Freshman Emma Jackson compiled a solid performance at the plate as well, adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Peck's RBI double was the key hit in Virginia Tech's three-run inning. North Carolina put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Hokies still held on for the 3-1 win.
 

 

GAME NOTES

» Lemley struck out 12 Tar Heels hitters.
» Virginia Tech grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» The Hokies out-hit the Tar Heels at a 7-5 clip.
» Virginia Tech pitchers limited North Carolina to 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
» Peck led the Hokies at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.


The Hokies are on the road again next weekend, taking on App State on Wednesday in a midweek, followed by an ACC series at Georgia Tech March 17-19.
