BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech picked up a statement 19-6 win over Pitt on Saturday afternoon at Thompson Field. Olivia Vergano's four goals and four assists led the Hokies in their largest margin of victory over an ACC opponent in program history.
Five Hokies had a multi-goal game, including: Vergano (4), Claire Schotta (4), Ella Rishko (3), Maura O'Malley (2) and Paige Tyson (2). Tech's 19 goals were the most that they scored this season and the second-most (20 vs. Virginia, 2021) that it has scored in an ACC game ever.
Virginia Tech jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first quarter, courtesy of an assortment of scorers including: Lauren Render, Kayla Rinaldi, Vergano, Tyson and Schotta.
Tech continued to pour it on in the second quarter with its highest-scoring quarter of play this season (six goals). With an 11-3 advantage, the Hokies had their highest lead margin going into halftime, as well.
With contributions from Rishko, O'Malley, Kayla Frank, and first-time goalscorer Jordan Tilley, the Hokies' margin grew with an 8-3 advantage in the second half.
Freshman Jordan Tilley made six saves in the game, facing only 13 shots. In comparison, Tech had 39 shots – the most since putting 42 out against Furman on March 15, 2022.
Sarah Gresham held down the draw controls with a career-high 10.
