Hokies battle until the very end against No. 1 UNC, fall 4-3

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women's tennis team put forth a stellar performance on Sunday morning coming within a couple sets of knocking off No. 1 UNC before losing 4-3.

The Tarheels jumped ahead early behind two ranked doubles pairings in their lineup -- No. 37 Brantmeier/Scotty & No. 4 Crawley/Tanguilig -- claiming wins 6-0 and 6-2 to take the doubles point.

Semra Aksu turned the tides for the Hokies scrapping to a 10-7 tie break in the third set, earning her first ranked victory of the season over No. 56 Reilly Tran, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(7). Court 5 featured more of the same for Tech with Erika Cheng going 1-0 in her debut against a ranked challenger, beating No. 75 Sara McClure in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. 

Katie Andreini battled in a back and forth third set tiebreak, coming out on top 11-9, to win 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(9) to close the match for Tech.

Aksu's performance capped an impressive weekend for her against some of the best competition in the country. The Izmir, Turkey native went 2-0 on the weekend with both matches being decided in three sets.
