Hokies run rule Abilene Christian to open Lone Star State Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 10/12 Virginia Tech softball team opened the Lone Star State Invitational with a 11-0 run-rule win over Abilene Christian on Friday. Tech scored a season-high 11 runs on 10 hits, while freshman Lyndsey Grein pitched a one-hit shutout to lead the Hokies over the Wildcats.

Grein (3-0) went the distance for Virginia Tech (8-3), giving up one hit, walking one and striking out seven.

Freshman Teagan Thrunk led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with a home run, the first of her career, a walk and four RBI. Junior Addy Greene provided a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and three RBI. Senior Kelsey Bennett also chipped in, going 1-for-3 for Virginia Tech with a double and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Junior Emma Ritter came across to score the lone run of the inning for Virginia Tech to get them on the board off a sac fly from Greene.

The Hokies then tacked on runs in the second, third, and fifth innings, with their biggest output coming in the third when they scored five times. The big hit in that inning was a two-run double off the bat of Bennett.

GAME NOTES

» Grein tossed a one-hit shutout for the Hokies.

» Thrunk drove in four runs for Virginia Tech.
» Virginia Tech grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.

» The Hokies drew seven walks from Abilene Christian pitching.
» Thrunk led the Hokies at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI.
