No. 14 Tech quieted by Charleston on Opening Day

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Sophomore Carson DeMartini went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI, but the No. 14 Virginia Tech Hokies still came up short on Friday, and suffered defeat at the hands of College of Charleston by a final of 5-2.

Senior Jonah Hurney (0-1) came out of the bullpen for Virginia Tech (0-1) and took the loss. Junior Griffin Green was a bright spot for the Hokies, starting the ballgame and throwing 4.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits, with three walks and five strikeouts.

Offensively, the Hokies were paced by DeMartini, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a double and an RBI. Junior Carson Jones put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies were trailing 1-0 in the sixth inning when they first put runs on the board. Virginia Tech plated two runs off of Charleston (SC) pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of DeMartini. The Hokies were unable to hold the lead, as Charleston (SC) scored four times over the remaining three innings to grab the 5-2 win.
