SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS

  • Georgia Tech dropped a close one on the road to Wake Forest on Saturday, 71-70. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as five points in the final two minutes, but a pair of late free throws by Wake's Tyree Appleby secured a dramatic win for the hosts.
  • Overall, the Yellow Jackets have been in a run of tight games. The last four contests for Georgia Tech have been decided by a total of 21 points.
  • Getting hot from beyond the arc will be important for the Hokies, as Georgia Tech boasts the league's third-best field-goal percentage defense at 30.8%.

The Series

  • Virginia Tech swept the season series a year ago to move its lead to 22-8 all-time against the Yellow Jackets.
  • The Hokies have won four of their last five against GT in Atlanta, including the most recent meeting – a 62-58 decision on Feb. 23, 2022.
  • Virginia Tech is 9-4 all-time against GT in Atlanta and 17-6 since joining the ACC.
  • The first game of the series was played on Feb. 16, 1921 in Blacksburg – a 31-15 win for the Hokies.
  • Virginia Tech has won eight of the previous 10 meetings in the series. Three of the last four have been double-digit VT wins.

HOKIE HEADLINES

  • Grant Basile dialed up 33 points for the second straight game to propel the Hokies to a 93-87 victory at Notre Dame. It was their first road win this season (1-7).
  • Over the last six games, Basile is averaging 24.3 points per game. Basile is one of four ACC players averaging at least 18 points per game in conference play.
  • Basile (seventh) and Sean Pedulla (13th) give the Hokies two of the top 13 scorers in the ACC.
  • Hunter Cattoor is second in the league in 3FG% at 42.4% (53-125).

BASILE MAKING HISTORY

  • Grant Basile became the first Tech men's basketball player to score at least 30 points in back-to-back games since Bryant Matthews achieved the feat in December of 2003.
  • Playing 140 miles from his hometown of Pewaukee, Wisconsin on Saturday, Basile had around 30 family members in attendance to watch his second straight 33-point performance. Basile had a stretch in the second half where he scored 16 of Tech's 18 points.
  • Basile now has three games of at least 30 points in 2022-23, becoming the first Hokie to accomplish that since Erick Green had four during the 2012-13 season.
  • Basile's career high of 37 points came against Marshall on Nov. 12, 2021 when he was at Wright State.
  • Against the Irish, Basile knocked down 13 field goals – setting a Virginia Tech record for a player in an ACC game.

UP NEXT

  • The Hokies will be back in Cassell Coliseum on Saturday for a 5 p.m. bout with Pitt. The game is sold out, but fans can purchase tickets to the contest on StubHub, the official secondary marketplace of Virginia Tech Athletics.
