Softball opens 2023 season with run-rule of ECU

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Hokie bats came out hot to open the season, recording 11 hits in the run-rule win over East Carolina. Sophomore Emma Lemley was dealing as well, throwing a four-hit shutout to lead the No. 11 Virginia Tech Hokies over the Pirates.

Lemley (1-0) went the distance for Virginia Tech (1-0), giving up four hits, walking one and striking out seven.

Sophomore Bre Peck led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 1-for-2 in the ballgame with a home run, a walk and three RBI. Freshman Teagan Thrunk put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Senior Kelsey Brown also chipped in, going 1-for-2 for Virginia Tech with two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hokies took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Virginia Tech's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Peck.

The Hokies also added runs in the third and fifth innings on the way to the 8-0 victory.

» Peck led the Hokies at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBI.
