Softball closes day two in Wilmington with 4-2 win over ECU

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Virginia Tech softball received contributions from every part of its lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Hokies put four runs on the board and knock off the East Carolina Pirates 4-2 Friday.

Freshman Lyndsey Grein (2-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for Virginia Tech (4-0). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, zero earned, on one hit, allowing two walks and striking out two.

Junior Emma Ritter came up clutch for the Hokies, going with a triple and an RBI to put Tech up 3-2 in the fifth. Junior Addy Greene also had a hit and a sacrifice fly for an RBI. Senior Jayme Bailey also chipped in, going 2-for-3 for Virginia Tech.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 2-0 after the Pirates scored two off an error, the Hokies put runs on the board in the second inning, also on an error. Virginia Tech picked up a pair of runs in the frame.

The game remained tied until the fifth inning, when the Hokies got going again on offense. Virginia Tech put up two runs in the frame, punctuated with an RBI triple off the bat of Ritter, which brought the Hokies lead to 3-2. Greene's sac fly then brought the lead to 4-2. The score remained 4-2 for the rest of the game, as Virginia Tech held on for the win.

The Hokies finish out their time in Wilmington on Saturday, facing Purdue Fort Wayne at 9AM. Game time moved up an hour due to expected weather.
