WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Virginia Tech softball team finished opening day 2-0, tallying a 5-1 win over UNC Wilmington. Freshman Lyndsey Grein got the start for the Hokies, making her debut and striking out nine UNC Wilmington hitters over seven innings of work to help power the No. 11 Virginia Tech Hokies over the Seahawks.
In addition to her nine strikeouts, Grein (1-0) went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and walking one for Virginia Tech (2-0).
Junior Emma Ritter led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a double, an inside-the-park home run and two RBI. Junior Cameron Fagan also posted her first home run of the season, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Freshman Kylie Aldridge also helped out, going 1-for-1 for Virginia Tech with a double and two walks. Aldridge got the start at catcher, making her collegiate debut.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Virginia Tech's offense produced a three-run output that included home runs from both Ritter and Fagan.
The Hokies then held the Seahawks scoreless before expanding their lead in the fourth inning. Virginia Tech got run-scoring doubles from Aldridge and Ritter to pick up a couple of runs, which brought the Hokies lead to 5-0. UNC Wilmington put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Hokies closed out the 5-1 win.
Tech will take on UNCW and ECU again tomorrow at the UNCW Tournament, facing the Seahawks at 11:30AM and the Pirates at 4:30PM.
