SCOUTING THE HURRICANES

  • After a hot 12-1 start, Miami has gone 4-4 in the calendar year against ACC opponents. Over the weekend, the 'Canes dropped a 71-68 result to Pitt.
  • Junior guard Isaiah Wong, who is considered one of the nation's best guards, is averaging 16.2 points, 4.7 boards and 3.6 assists this season.
  • Winning the rebounding battle will be massive for Tech, as Miami is undefeated in games that it holds a positive rebounding margin in this season (13).

The Series

  • Tech and Miami split the season series in 2021-22 with each side winning on the road.
  • The Hurricanes lead the all-time series, 25-20. The first game of the series was played on Jan. 10, 2001 in Blacksburg.
  • Tech has won six of the previous nine head-to-head meetings. The previous four games have been decided by a combined 10 points.
  • Tech is 7-12 all-time against Miami in Coral Gables, including a 71-70 decision last season on the strength of Darius Maddox's game-winning 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining in regulation.

HOKIE HEADLINES

  • Tech torched the 3-point line against Syracuse, specifically in the first half, en route to a 85-70 victory.
  • Grant Basile scored over 20 points for the second straight game, finishing with a game-high 25 points. It was his fifth game of at least 20 points as a Hokie.
  • Hunter Cattoor joined Basile in the 20-point club, connecting on 6 of 10 from deep. He's shooting 55% (11-20) from long range over the last two games.
  • Tech assisted on 26 of its 32 made field goals – a program record for an ACC game. The Hokies' 26 assists were more than the Orange's 23 FGM.

SHARING THE ROCK

  • The Hokies set a new program best for assists in an ACC game, dishing out 26 dimes on 32 field goals made Saturday night. Virginia Tech last bested the 26 assists mark in any game on Nov. 20, 2019 against Delaware State (29).
  • Tech had two players – Justyn Mutts and Hunter Cattoor – with eight assists. The last time two players reached that mark in the same game was against Syracuse on Jan. 26, 2019 when Justin Robinson and Nickeil Alexander-Walker both had eight.
  • Mutts flirted with his second career triple-double, falling just two assists shy (11p, 12r, 8a). Ironically, his first triple-double came against Syracuse last season when he had 12 points, 14 boards and 11 assists. Mutts was deemed by Cattoor as a "cheat code" to attacking a 2-3 zone following Tech's win.

UP NEXT

  • The Hokies return to Cassell Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 11 for a noon matchup with No. 6 Virginia. The game is sold out, but fans can purchase tickets to the contest on StubHub, the official secondary marketplace of Virginia Tech Athletics.
