Amoore scores 24 points in Virginia Tech's 68-65 win over North Carolina

BLACKSBURG, VA --Georgia Amoore scored 24 points to help lead the Virginia Tech women's basketball team over the North Carolina Tar Heels 68-65 at home Sunday.

Amoore added six assists to her 24 point game to lead the Hokies (12-2, 2-2). Cayla King helped out with 12 points and eight rebounds and D'asia Gregg chipped in with a double double off the bench with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Virginia Tech took advantage of fantastic ball movement in Sunday's game, piling up 16 assists on 21 made field goals. Amoore's six assists were the most for the Hokies and Kayana Traylor also added five assists of her own.

How It Happened

After falling behind 14-11, Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run with 1:33 left in the first quarter to take a 16-14 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 16 points.

North Carolina rallied to take a 35-31 lead before Virginia Tech went on a 6-0 run starting at the 1:02 mark in the second period to take a 37-35 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Virginia Tech was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 21 points.

North Carolina then took a 43-37 lead following intermission before Virginia Tech went on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a three from Amoore, to grab a 46-43 lead with 3:46 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Tar Heels had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hokies still entered the fourth quarter with a 53-51 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 16 total points.

The Hokies coasted to the win from there, increasing their margin of victory by outscoring the Tar Heels 15-14 in the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
