Virginia Tech signee earns national honor

BLACKSBURG – Incoming Virginia Tech linebacker signee Tavorian Copeland was honored Tuesday night with the prestigious Watkins Award.

The national award honors the top African-American high school football player for his contributions on and off the football field. The announcement occurred at halftime of the Under Armour All-American Game in Orlando, Florida.
 
Copeland carries a 3.96 GPA at Appomattox County High School and hopes to major in neuroscience at Virginia Tech with plans of becoming a Rhodes Scholar and an anesthesiologist. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound linebacker helped Coach Doug Smith and the Raiders to two state titles, with four 10-win seasons and an overall record of 44-8 during his career.

The Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Trophy Award was initiated in 1992 to promote academic excellence among young African-American males. Since 1992, high school seniors have been honored with the title "Premiere African-American Male Scholar-Athlete."
