BLACKSBURG – It was another impressive semester in the classroom for Virginia Tech Athletics in the fall of 2022.
The fall of 2022 set multiple benchmarks for Tech athletics:
- Athletic Director Honor Roll
- Student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Student-athletes with a 4.0 semester GPA
- Student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 4.0
- Department semester GPA
These benchmarks were made possible through the tremendous work by Tech student-athletes and the commitment from Tech's Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS).
SAASS supports Tech student-athletes by providing comprehensive academic programming while also monitoring their NCAA eligibility. In addition, the SAASS team works in close partnership with each coaching staff to ensure student-athletes are achieving their full academic potential.
Led by director of student-athlete academic support services Sarah Armstrong, SAASS employs 14 full-time staff, two interns and a number of Virginia Tech students as mentors and tutors.
"I am proud of the exemplary work by our student-athletes and our SAASS team," Armstrong said. "Our team remains committed to supporting our student-athletes in achieving their full academic potential. It's very rewarding to see the results in the classroom that our student-athletes have earned."
Over 70% (426) of Virginia Tech's 596 student-athletes during the fall of 2022 finished with a GPA of 3.0 or higher to earn Athletic Director Honor Roll distinction.
In total, Tech's 596 student-athletes combined for 3.24 semester GPA.
Even more impressive was the fact that 244 Hokies finished with a GPA of 3.4 or higher to garner Dean's List accolades. Dean's list honors solely recognize the work of undergraduate students. Fifty-two Hokies earned perfect 4.0 GPAs from both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Seventeen of Tech's 20 sports achieved a 3.0 or greater semester GPA. Men's indoor/outdoor track and field counts as one sport, as does women's indoor/outdoor track and field.
Among the men's sports at Virginia Tech, men's golf had the best semester in the classroom in the fall with a 3.44 team GPA. Staying on the links, women's golf took top honors among the women's teams with a 3.65 team GPA.
