Tech Athletics excels in latest NCAA APR report

BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech Athletics continues to post impressive academic numbers as shown in the NCAA's latest Academic Progress Rate report, which was released Tuesday afternoon by the NCAA.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete during the school year. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and programs also can face penalties for continued low academic performance. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on annual scores from the 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years.

The Tech women's cross country, women's golf, women's soccer, men's swimming and diving, and men's tennis teams all recorded perfect multi-year APRs of 1,000. The women's golf program achieved a perfect score for the fifth consecutive year. The women's cross country and men's swimming and diving programs achieved perfect scores for the first time in school history.

In all, nine Tech sport programs finished with a 990 multi-year score or better out of 1,000. The group includes the five previously stated teams, along with the sports of women's basketball (996), women's swimming and diving (996), women's track and field (996), and women's tennis (992). Notably, women's basketball's 996 is a program record and 66 points higher than the 2016-17 report.

Men's basketball accumulated a 984, which is the second-highest score in program history.

Football posted a 964, which marked a six-point increase from the 2018-19 report. The football program has been above the 950 threshold for the past decade.
