Hokie ClubFAIRFAX – Led by a first-place finish at 184-pounds by redshirt junior Sam Fisher, the Hokies placed three on the podium over the weekend at the 2022 ARMS Software Patriots Open in Fairfax, Virginia.
Fisher went 4-0 on the day with two bonus point victories in his first two bouts then adding two decision victories to claim his first tournament title of the season. Fisher defeated Lucas Uliano of Appalachian State in the finals to give the Hokies their lone champion on Sunday.
Joining Fisher in finding the podium were redshirt sophomore Clayton Ulrey and redshirt freshman Ty Finn. At 157-pounds, Ulrey was 3-1 with his lone loss coming in the semifinals to NCAA qualifier Peter Pappas from George Mason. Ulrey would rebound to take third with a decisive 8-2 victory over Columbia's Andrew Garr to cap off his tournament run. Finn opened his tournament with a fall in the opening round, but would then drop his second bout to two-time NCAA qualifier RJ Mosely of Gardner-Webb. Finn would then rattle off three straight victories on the backside en route to a fifth-place finish at 165-pounds.
