Strong defensive performance propels Virginia Tech past Tennessee 59-56

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech women's basketball team held Tennessee to just 14.3 percent from deep in a 2-for-14 shooting performance on the way to a 59-56 win over the Lady Volunteers on the road Sunday.

The Hokies (8-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Kayana Traylor, who had 18 points. Cayla King tacked on 11 points and three steals and D'asia Gregg chipped in as well with 10 points off the bench.

Virginia Tech's defense held Tennessee to only 14.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 33.3 percent from the field.

How It Happened

After jumping out to an 11-5 advantage, Virginia Tech went on a 6-0 run with 4:48 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Traylor, to increase its lead to 17-5. The Hokies then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 23-13 advantage. Virginia Tech capitalized on six Tennessee turnovers in the period, turning them into 12 points on the other end of the floor.

The Hokies maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 34-30 edge. Virginia Tech was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 11 points.

Virginia Tech continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a three from King, to expand its lead further to 46-34 with 6:33 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lady Volunteers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hokies still entered the fourth quarter with a 51-43 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 17 total points.

The Hokies then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech took advantage of four Tennessee turnovers in the quarter, scoring two points off of those takeaways.
