Cayla King leads Hokies with 15 points in 64-59 loss to Clemson

CLEMSON, SC --The Virginia Tech women's basketball team recorded 12 assists on 19 made shots, but the Hokies fell to the Clemson Tigers 64-59.

The Hokies (11-2, 1-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Cayla King, who had 15 points, six rebounds and two steals. Elizabeth Kitley added 14 points and six rebounds and Georgia Amoore helped out with 14 points.

The Virginia Tech offense was very productive from beyond the arc, making nine threes on 28 attempts. King was the most prolific shooter for the Hokies, draining five treys in the contest.

Virginia Tech forced 15 Clemson turnovers. The Hokies turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Kayana Traylor led the way individually with three steals.

How It Happened

Virginia Tech struggled out of the gate, falling behind 26-16 at the end of the first quarter.

Clemson kept adding to that lead, building a 30-16 advantage before Virginia Tech went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Amoore, to narrow its deficit to 30-23. Clemson responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Hokies trailing 38-26 heading into halftime.

Clemson continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 47-34 advantage before Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from King, to trim its deficit to 47-39 with 57 seconds to go in the third. The Hokies were unable to cut further into the deficit, but did not cede ground to Clemson either and entered the fourth quarter trailing 49-41. Virginia Tech took advantage of seven Clemson turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of takeaways.

Virginia Tech came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by King's three, to shrink the deficit to 49-47 with 7:52 to go in the contest. Clemson responded and outscored the Hokies the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 64-59. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 18 points.
