Moments of Excellence: Tech Spirit squads thrive in 2022

Support Spirit

As the 2022 calendar year comes to a close, Virginia Tech Athletics will spend the month of December celebrating the Hokies' standout achievements from the past 12 months in a campaign called "Moments of Excellence."

The "Moments of Excellence" campaign will serve as a look back to the historic highlights and memorable accomplishments in Tech Athletics during 2022. Each varsity sport program will have an outstanding moment featured during December on the official Virginia Tech Athletics website and @HokieSports social media properties. Fans can visit the Hokies' social media directory to stay in contact with Tech Athletics and their favorite sports teams.

Virginia Tech's Spirit squads had an eventful 2022, including returning to nationals in person this past January and then cheering on the men's basketball team in March in Brooklyn when the Hokies won the ACC Tournament for the first time in program history.

THE RETURN
Once a year at the ESPN Wide World of Sports on the campus of the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, college spirit teams have the opportunity to compete against one another in an effort to be crowned a champion of the three-day UCA College Nationals competition.

After COVID-19 impacted the 2021 competition, with it being virtual, the 2022 competition was back to in-person and the Hokies couldn't have been more excited.

"It's our one time of the year that we get to compete and represent the school at our own competition," explained cheerleader Blaine Williams, a senior from New Kent, Virginia.

"It's almost like March Madness, but for dance," added Jacqueline Hatheway, an Oakton, Virginia native. "All the teams show up from across every Power Five conference, smaller conferences…it's insanely competitive. It's pretty much the top competition in both cheer and dance. It's the most coveted title."

ACC TITLE
Every Hokie will forever have a story to share about how they engaged in Virginia Tech men's basketball's magical run to the 2022 ACC championship. They will always remember exactly where they were, what they ate the day of and the lucky clothes they wore to superstitiously propel the team to the podium.

For Sierra Bennett and Hokies Spirit, they experienced this streak closer than anyone else, representing Virginia Tech from the baseline on the national stage.

"One day I'm going to bring my kids to Cassell and say to them, 'That banner up there? I was there for that,'" said Bennett, a senior from New Market, Maryland. "I've experienced so many exciting games, but this has got to take the top spot."
