Kitley and Amoore have double-doubles in Virginia Tech's 86-48 victory against UNC Asheville

BLACKSBURG – Elizabeth Kitley and Georgia Amoore each recorded double-doubles to help lead the Virginia Tech women's basketball team past the UNC Asheville Bulldogs 86-48 at home Sunday.

The Hokies (10-0) had five players score in double figures, led by Taylor Soule, who had 21 points. Kitley added a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Cayla King helped out with 12 points and two steals.

Virginia Tech did a great job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 20 assists while turning the ball over nine times. Amoore's 10 assists were the most for the Hokies. Kayana Traylor also added with three assists of her own.

Virginia Tech forced 22 UNC Asheville turnovers while committing just nine themselves in Sunday's game. The Hokies turned those takeaways into 24 points on the offensive end of the floor. King led the way individually with two steals.

How It Happened

After jumping out to an 11-8 advantage, Virginia Tech went on a 6-0 run with 2:52 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Traylor, to increase its lead to 17-8, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Virginia Tech did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 17 points close to the basket.

Virginia Tech built that first quarter lead to 31-17 before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 2:16 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 39-17. The Hokies kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 41-19 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 24 points close to the basket.

Virginia Tech continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 12-0 run to expand its lead further to 56-23 with 4:43 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Bulldogs had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hokies still entered the fourth quarter with a 65-34 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 24 total points.

Virginia Tech kept widening that lead, expanding it to 77-44 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by D'Asia Gregg's three, to grow the lead to 83-44 with 4:09 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 86-48 win. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 21 points.
