Amoore records triple-double in Virginia Tech's 85-54 victory over Nebraska

BLACKSBURG – Georgia Amoore showed out with a triple-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists to lead the Virginia Tech women's basketball team past the Nebraska Cornhuskers 85-54 at home Thursday.

The Hokies (7-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Elizabeth Kitley, who recorded a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Amoore tacked on a triple-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists and Taylor Soule helped out with 18 points.

Virginia Tech shared the ball well in Thursday's game, racking up 17 assists on 30 made field goals. Amoore's 11 assists paced the Hokies and D'asia Gregg also helped out with three assists of her own.

The Virginia Tech defense held Nebraska shooters to only 33.9 percent from the field, including 30 percent from three-point range. The Cornhuskers did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only nine offensive rebounds and scored two second chance points while Virginia Tech pulled down 29 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 9-6 advantage, Virginia Tech went on a 9-0 run with 6:16 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 18-6. The Hokies then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 21-8 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 21 points.

Virginia Tech kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 9:20 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Amoore, to increase its lead to 26-10. The Cornhuskers cut into that lead, but the Hokies still enjoyed a 35-24 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 14 points.

Virginia Tech wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Amoore, to expand its lead further to 40-24 with 8:30 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Cornhuskers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hokies still entered the fourth quarter with a 55-42 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 20 total points.

Virginia Tech started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 17-0 run to grow the lead to 72-42 with 5:24 to go in the contest. The Hokies kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 85-54 win. Virginia Tech took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 30 points in the paint.
