HEADLINES FROM LAST WEEK
Wednesday, volleyball swept Wake Forest, 3-0 in Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies hit .353 over three sets, tied with their best hitting percentage of the season. Freshman Sarah Malinowski finished the day with a career high .615 hitting percentage, while senior Cera Powell led the team with 17 kills.
On Wednesday, men's soccer punched their ticket to the ACC quarterfinal after they upset No. 11 Louisville, 2-1. Senior Daniel Starr was the Hokie to net the game winner, a near post shot at the 55-minute mark. With another 35 minutes left in regulation, sophomore Ben Martino rose to the occasion and made several big saves to secure the win. His best save came with less than two minutes left on the clock, when he made a leaping one-handed save off a Louisville volley.
Friday, Tech hosted the Hokie Open at the Buford Meredith course. Junior Star Price ran a personal-best 14:50.3, crossing the line first for the Hokie women, who finished in fourth place. For the men, freshman Blake Fairbanks led the team with a personal best 19:38.3 and finishing in 17th place.
Volleyball earned their second straight ACC win, taking down Duke 3-1 on Friday at home. Freshman Sierra Cates had a match-high two kills, while graduate student Maddie Slagle had match-high 18 digs in the win.
Men's tennis wrapped up play at the ITA National Fall Championships on Friday. Junior Ryan Fishback and sophomore Alberto Orso picked up a pair of hard-fought wins against Mississippi State before falling TCU in the quarterfinals.
Men's soccer's season came to an end on Sunday afternoon, as they fell to Wake Forest in the ACC Championship quarterfinal, 1-0. The lone goal came in the 62nd minute off a free kick that curled around the wall and into the top left corner of the net. The Hokies created five chances throughout the game, with three of them being on target.
