BLACKSBURG, VA --Elizabeth Kitley and Kayana Traylor both recorded double-doubles to help lead the Virginia Tech women's basketball team over the Longwood Lancers 89-28 at home Sunday.
The Hokies (6-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Kitley, who notched a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Ashley Owusu tacked on 21 points and Traylor helped out with a double-double off the bench with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Virginia Tech offense was very productive from deep, pouring in 10 threes on 28 attempts. Owusu was the most prolific shooter for the Hokies, draining four treys in the contest, a career-high.
Virginia Tech's defense held Longwood to only 16.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 16.7 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Virginia Tech went on a 12-0 run with 6:20 left in the first quarter to take a 14-2 lead. The Hokies then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 20-4 advantage. Virginia Tech capitalized on five Longwood turnovers in the period, turning them into 12 points on the other end of the floor.
Virginia Tech kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 21-0 run starting at the 7:30 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Charlise Dunn, to increase its lead to 41-7. The Lancers cut into that lead, but the Hokies still enjoyed a 41-10 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech saw non-starters score six of its 21 total points off the bench in the quarter.
Virginia Tech continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 13-0 run to expand its lead further to 62-21 with 51 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Virginia Tech knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 21 total points.
Virginia Tech kept widening that lead, expanding it to 77-26 before going on a 10-0 run to grow the lead to 87-26 with 1:39 to go in the contest. The Hokies held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 89-28 win. Virginia Tech got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring nine of its 27 total points.
