Hokies pull through with 69-64 win over Charleston Southern

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech was able to overcome its lowest shooting percentage of the season to pick up a 69-64 win against Charleston Southern on Friday night.

Despite shooting 42.6-percent from the field, Hokies had four players score in double figures. Justyn Mutts led the way with 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Sean Pedulla tacked on 15 points and Darius Maddox helped out with 12 points.

Lynn Kidd had a career night with 11 points and eight rebounds on Friday. His biggest impact came with just over 1:20 left in the game when he rocked the rim with a dunk that put the Hokies ahead, 66-64.

How It Happened

After falling behind 21-19, Virginia Tech went on an 8-0 run with 8:32 left in the first half to take a 27-21 lead. The Hokies then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 37-33 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 37 points.

Charleston Southern proceeded to take a 43-41 lead before Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run to seize a 46-43 lead with 13:06 to go in the contest. The Buccaneers continued to hang around and took the lead with 7:39 remaining in the game before the Hokies went on a 6-0 run to regain control. Both sides exchanged buckets until Kidd had a go-ahead dunk with 1:22 to go to put Tech up 66-64. Charleston Souther wouldn't score another point in the game. Tech finished the game shooting 4-5 from the field in the final five minutes.


Game Notes

» The Hokies only had seven turnovers - marking the fifth time this season that they've had less than 10 turnovers.
» Virginia Tech cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting a season-high 14 offensive boards in the game.
» For the second game in a row, Mutts was one rebound shy of his fourth double-double of the season.
