Hokies bench scores 26 in 73-57 victory against Missouri

NASSAU, Bahamas --The Virginia Tech women's basketball team got a 26-point showing from the bench on the way to a 73-57 victory against the Missouri Tigers at Baha Mar Convention Center Wednesday.

The Hokies (5-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Kayana Traylor, who had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists. Elizabeth Kitley tacked on a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Georgia Amoore chipped in as well with 15 points and six assists.

Virginia Tech collected 36 rebounds in Wednesday's game compared to Missouri's 24, led by Kitley's 10 boards. The Hokies also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 11 rebounds into 15 second chance points.

The Virginia Tech defense held Missouri shooters to just 37.5 percent from the field. The Tigers did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only six offensive rebounds and scored five second chance points while Virginia Tech pulled down 25 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After falling behind 3-0, Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run with 8:53 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Amoore, to take a 5-3 lead. The Hokies then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 14-11.

Missouri kept adding to that lead, building an 18-14 advantage before Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run to take a 19-18 lead. The Tigers then came roaring back to take a 28-26 lead heading into halftime.

Virginia Tech came out of halftime on fire, going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Cayla King, to grab a 33-28 lead with 7:06 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Hokies added seven points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 49-37 edge. Virginia Tech's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 12 of the team's 23 third-quarter points.

Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Amoore's jumper, to grow the lead to 61-44 with 4:38 to go in the contest. The Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still cruised the rest of the way for the 73-57 win. Virginia Tech pulled down two offensive rebounds to score five second chance points out of 24 total in the period
