Tech Takeaways: A look back at the Hokies' three games in the Charleston Classic

BLACKSBURG – Justyn Mutts was named to the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging a double-double over the weekend, as the Hokies finished runners-up in the event.

GLUE GUY

  • In the three games, Mutts averaged 12.3 points and 10.3 rebounds for the Hokies. He played in 112:06 of the 120 (93.1%) possible minutes.
  • Despite missing the first game of the season, Mutts leads Tech in rebounds with 46 (9.2 per game). He has led the Hokies in rebounding in each game except against William & Mary when he was one of four Virginia Tech players with four boards.

BATTLE-TESTED

  • Virginia Tech entered the Charleston Classic at 3-0 with an average margin of victory of 27 points. In their 2-1 stint over the weekend, all of the Hokies' games were decided by four points or less.

FINDING A WAY TO SCORE

  • The Hokies have shot 44.6-percent or higher from the field in each of its games this season. Dating back to last season, Tech has shot at that clip or higher in seven consecutive games.
  • The seven-game streak is the longest streak of the Mike Young era. In six games between Jan. 24 and Feb. 7 last season, the Hokies shot 46.6-percent or higher.
  • Tech is scoring efficiently despite struggling from deep in the last two games. The nine made 3-pointers in the last two games ties the lowest two-game 3-pointer total (VMI and South Florida, 2020-21) for Tech since Mike Young took charge.
