Kitley's double-double powers Hokies past Kentucky 82-74

NASSAU, Bahamas --Elizabeth Kitley secured a double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds to help the Virginia Tech women's basketball team beat the Kentucky Wildcats 82-74 at Baha Mar Convention Center Monday.

The Hokies (4-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Kitley, who notched a double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Ashley Owusu tacked on 16 points and six rebounds and Taylor Soule chipped in as well with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Led by Soule's five offensive rebounds, Virginia Tech did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 19 second chance points.

The Virginia Tech defense caused its share of mistakes in Monday's game, forcing 18 Kentucky turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Kitley's one steal led the way individually for the Hokies.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 13-6 advantage, Virginia Tech went on a 9-0 run with 3:04 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Cayla King, to increase its lead to 22-6. The Hokies then added five points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 29-8 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 29 points.

Virginia Tech kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 6:47 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 42-14. The Wildcats cut into that lead, but the Hokies still enjoyed a 44-23 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 15 points close to the basket.

After intermission, Virginia Tech held on to its advantage and owned a 67-49 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 23 points in the paint.

The Hokies then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
