BLACKSBURG – Five student-athletes from the Virginia Tech women's soccer team have earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors.
The Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.50 GPA, have a minimum of one year completed at their current institution, and be a starter or key reserve player, athletically.
Sophomore Allie George has played in 38 matches for the Hokies, appearing in 18 of 19 matches during the 2022 season. George recorded her first goal of the season against Northern Colorado in the 86th minute resulting in a 5-2 win at home. Her second goal came later on during conference play against Miami. George recorded 20 shots, two goals, and one assist in 392 minutes of action. She currently holds a 3.59 GPA majoring in marketing management.
Goalkeeper Lauren Hargrove leads the Hokies with a 4.0 GPA studying human nutrition, foods, and exercise. Hargrove took over as the starting goalkeeper in the second match of the season, recording six shutouts and 51 saves in 17 games. She was vital in the Hokies success throughout the year and helped earn her team a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Hargrove recorded three shutouts in her first four games as a starter allowing only one goal versus Elon (5-1). She then went on to log the clean sheet against No. 22 NC State (1-0).
Midfielder Gabby Johnson is in her second year of graduate school at Virginia Tech and holds a 3.9 GPA while studying reputation management. Johnson made three goals and two assists starting in eight matches this season. She scored her first goal of the season against Elon and her second goal four days later against Old Dominion. Near the end of the season, Johnson put the Hokies up 1-0 against Syracuse going into the half. Tech won the match over Syracuse 2-0. Johnson has served as a team captain for the Hokies for the past two years.
Junior Riley McCarthy started in six matches playing the full 90 minutes as a defender in two games, both resulting in a shutout victory. McCarthy appeared in 12 games throughout the season logging in 576 minutes of play. She carries a 3.51 GPA while majoring in hospitality and tourism management.
Defender Averi Visage was one of five Hokies to start in 19 of 19 matches this season, recording the second-highest amount of minutes played on the team (1,629). Visage played the full 90 minutes in each of the seven shutout victories claimed by Virginia Tech this season. She is one of the hardest working Hokies on the pitch and in the classroom, currently working on a bachelor's degree in management with a 3.82 GPA.
