Hokies to clash with Mountaineers in NCAA tournament opener

BLACKSBURG –  After receiving a berth into the NCAA Tournament, Virginia Tech women's soccer team will start play in the national championship on Sunday, Nov. 13, when Tech travels to West Virginia for the first round of action (1 p.m.). Sunday's match between the Hokies and the Mountaineers will air live on ESPN+.

Tickets to Sunday's NCAA tournament match are available online at wvugame.com. For the general public, tickets are available for $8 while a group of 10 may purchase tickets for $3 a piece, youth may purchase tickets for $5.

THE HIGHLIGHTS 
• Run in the NCAA:  Finishing No. 46 on the NCAA RPI list, Virginia Tech earned one of ten ACC bids to the 2022 NCAA tournament – the program's 13th all-time berth and its fourth within the last five seasons (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022). Under head coach Chugger Adair, the Hokies have an 11-8-1 record while playing in the tournament. Tech is 7-5-0 all-time during the opening round of the NCAA tournament (4-3-0 away matches). The Hokies last advanced from the first round in 2021 defeating Ohio State (3-1). Tori Powell is the lone active Hokie with one goal against Ohio State during the tourney,  assisted by Emma Pelkowski and Victoria Haugen. 

History with the Mountaineers:  Sunday's NCAA tournament opener between Virginia Tech and West Virginia will mark the third postseason meeting between the programs. Tech defeated the Mountaineers in NCAA tournament play in 2011 and 2013. In 2013, Tech faced West Virginia in the second round of the tournament winning the match 1-0 in Blacksburg. The Hokies scored the lone goal of the game in the 60th minute, Tech advanced in the tournament making it into the semifinals. The Mountaineers played a closed game with only two shots on goal by the Hokies and one by the Mountaineers. The Hokies are tied in the all-time series against West Virginia, 3-3, having won their last three matchups. 

Tech Scores:  Virginia Tech is led by its 2022 ACC All-Freshman and All-ACC Third-Team forward, Taylor Price, who enters Sunday's match with eight goals and three assists during the regular season. The Hokies are backed by a strong group of athletes with six women scoring three or more goals. Tori Powell has made six goals and four assists, followed by Natalie Mitchell with three goals and eight assists. Mitchell leads the team in assists and is ranked fourth in the ACC. Taylor Bryan and Sophie Maltese have found the back of the net four times this season. Goalkeeper Lauren Hargrove has recorded six clean sheets this season, including three in the ACC (NC State, Wake Forest, and Syracuse). 

UP NEXT
Sunday's winner between Virginia Tech and West Virginia will advance to the second and third rounds of the NCAA tournament.  The right to host the second and third rounds will be awarded to the program within the next four-team pod of the bracket that possesses the highest tournament seed.
