Hokies fall at Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell on the road at Miami (Fla.) on Sunday afternoon, 3-0. The loss drops the Hokies to 9-12 overall and 2-8 ACC play.
 
Ava Francis was the team-leader in kills for Tech, recording nine kills. Seven other Hokies recorded at least one kill, as Elayna Duprey finished her day with eight kills. Francis also led the Hokies with a .350 hitting percentage.
 
Defensively, Madde Slagle had seven digs and Anabel Zier added two blocks. Hanna Borer once again led Tech with 28 assists.
 
Sets one and two were all Miami as the Canes jumped out to an early lead in the first set, leading by as many as 19-10. Miami was able to take the first set win 25-14 after going on a 5-0 run to finish out the set.
 
The second set was much of the same, as Miami led 17-11 midway through the second set. The Hokies were able to fight off two set points before falling in the second set due to a block from the Hurricanes.
 
Tech battled in the third set, tying it up at 11-11 after a kill from Duprey. The Hokies continued on to take the lead, going up 15-13 off a kill from Cara Lewis. The Hokies held the lead until 17-17 when the Canes went on a 6-0 scoring run to take the advantage. From there, the Canes closed out the set to take the 25-20 win and the sweep.
 
The Canes finished the match hitting .425, compared to a .126 put up by the Hokies. Angela Grieve finished with a match-high 10 kills and a .391 hitting percentage. Peyman Yardimci added nine kills and Abby Casiano had eight kills. Yaidaliz Rosado had 14 digs Janice Leao had six blocks to help out defensively.
 
The Hokies return home next weekend, hosting Virginia on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by No. 8 Pitt on Sunday at 1 p.m.
