NOTRE DAME, IND. – Virginia Tech fell to Notre Dame on Friday night, 1-0, after conceding a second-half goal from the penalty spot.
Behind a six-save outing from Ben Martino, the Hokies were able to stay within striking distance of the Fighting Irish all evening. In the 39th minute, Martino stepped up to save a Notre Dame penalty with a diving effort to his right.
Both sides went into the break with seven shots.
In the second half, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech continued to push forward, but the hosts experienced more success putting shots on target.
The stalemate came to an end in the 59th minute when Notre Dame was awarded its second penalty of the night. Paddy Burns made no mistake when he stepped up to the spot and slotted it home into the left corner.
In the closing 30 minutes, the Hokies were unable to find an equalizer – leading to a fourth-consecutive defeat.
