Hokies fall to Florida State on the road

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Virginia Tech volleyball team could not overcome an opposing Seminoles offense Friday on the road, falling to Florida State in straight sets (26-28, 17-25, 13-25).

The loss dropped Virginia Tech's record to 9-11 overall and 2-7 in ACC play.

Cera Powell finished with eight kills on the day to lead the Hokies attack, finishing with a hitting percentage of .333. Tech got 12 digs from Maddie Slagle to lead them defensively and Logan Mosley recorded six digs to move up to 9th in school history in career digs. She now has 1,242 total digs in her Hokie career.

How It Happened

The Hokies dropped a tight first set, losing 28-26 in a game that was tied nine times and had four lead changes. Tech jumped out to an early 10-5 lead, capped off by a kill from Ava Francis. The Seminoles battled, coming within one at 16-15 and then tying the set up at 20-20. From there, the two teams traded points until Florida State took the first set off an ace. The Hokies had their best offensive showing in the first set, hitting .286 as Elayna Duprey led the way with five kills. Slagle recorded nine of her digs in the opening set. 

A 25-17 second-set loss put Virginia Tech down 2-0 in the match. The Hokies were down 11-2 before battling back to come within six at 13-7 but the Seminoles retained the lead to take the set. The Hokies recorded more kills than FSU with 13 but the Seminoles out-hit the Hokies .346 to .161. Florida State also added three blocks in the second set. 

Florida State finished the sweep with a set-three victory. The Seminoles had their best offensive performance in the third set, hitting .440 with 14 kills. The defense also helped out with a block and 11 digs to clinch the victory. Khori Louis finished the match with 11 kills for Florida State, leading all attackers with a .714 hitting percentage.

The Hokies return to the court on Sunday, taking on Miami at 1 p.m. to conclude their road trip.
