Hokies prep for DePaul Invitational

CHICAGO — The Virginia Tech volleyball team travels to Chicago to compete in the DePaul Invitational on Friday, Sept. 9. The Hokies look to continue their three-game win streak in their matches against Eastern Michigan, DePaul and Saint Louis.

THINGS TO KNOW
 
Scouting Eastern Michigan
 
The Hokies will play against Eastern Michigan for the first time since 1987. Freshman Sabrina Gremm currently leads the Eagles in kills with 65. This season, junior Olivia Szylar has 166 assists and three kills. Senior Krista Blakely registered 15 kills for Eastern Michigan in the game against Xavier on Sept. 3, marking the 13th match of her career she had double-digit kills.
 
Scouting DePaul
 
During the Falcon Invitational last weekend, junior Jill Pressly was named to the All-Tournament team. Pressly averaged 3.31 kills per set, 2.69 digs per set and 3.92 points per set across the three matches. Additionally, at the Falcon Invitational, junior Rachel Krasowski registered a season-high 26 digs. Another player to watch out for is sophomore Maggie Jones, who has a .294 attack percentage this season.
 
Scouting Saint Louis
 
So far during the 2022 season, the Billikens are 4-2. Sophomore Mak Hill leads the team with 60 kills and a .264 attack percentage. Graduate student Dimitra Tziarli  has a team-high 11 blocks, while junior Carlie Rodgers leads the team with 105 digs. The Billikens are solid at the service line, posting 69 aces so far, compared to only 36 from opponents. Irmak Gokcen leads the team with 19, followed by Rodgers with 14.
 
Taking Honors
 
Last weekend, the Hokies went undefeated in the Hokie Invitational. Two players took home honors: Maddie Slagle and Anabel Zier. Slagle was named the MVP of the Hokie Invitational after recording 33 digs over the three matches with 3.67 digs per set and a .975 reception percentage. Zier earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team, finishing the weekend with 17 blocks, 16 kills and a .500 attack percentage.
 
 
UP NEXT
 
The Hokies will host the Virginia Tech Classic beginning on Thursday, Sept. 15. Tech will welcome App State, Norfolk State and Western Carolina. The Hokies first game will take place on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Norfolk State, followed by a matchup on Friday against either App State or WCU.
