The first half is in the books in Norfolk, and Virginia Tech football trails Old Dominion 10-7.
Tech outgained ODU 198-101 on offense over the first two quarters. The Hokies went 3-of-9 on third down and held the Monarchs to one third-down conversion on seven tries. Tech owned a slight edge in the time of possession battle, holding the ball for 16:52 compared to 13:08 for Old Dominion.
The Hokies broke the scoreless deadlock on their second drive of the game. Quarterback Grant Wells took a big hit on second down but managed to find wide receiver Kaleb Smith for a 39-yard strike that set up a quarterback keeper two plays later from 18 yards out.
Old Dominion got on the board early in the second quarter with a 29-yard field goal after being stopped on third and 3 after a stellar tackle in the backfield by Nasir Peoples. The Monarchs took the lead after recovering an errant snap on a Tech field goal attempt late in the quarter.
Linebacker Dax Hollifield forced a fumble in the waning seconds, but the Hokies were unable to capitalize as ODU took a 3-point lead into the break.
