Virginia Tech returns home to face Boston College and Syracuse

BLACKSBURG — TheVirginia Tech volleyball team returns to Cassell Coliseum to open ACC play at home. The Hokies will take on Boston College on Friday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m., followed by Syracuse on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
 
THINGS TO KNOW
 
Scouting Boston College
 
This season, Boston College is 13-3 with a 1-1 mark in ACC play. Kate Brennan leads the ACC in hitting percentage with a .478 and is ranked fourth in blocks with 64 total blocks and an average of 1.10 per set. Alayna Crabtree is ranked 30th in the NCAA and second in the ACC for service aces with 25 and an average of 0.51 per set. She also leads the Eagles in kills with 161 this season. Julia Haggerty is ranked 17th in the NCAA and third in the ACC for blocks this season with 72 total and an average of 1.33 per set. 
 
Scouting Syracuse
 
Syracuse is 6-6 on the year and opened the conference season 2-0. Polina Shemanova is the points and kills leader for the Orange, recording 201.5 points (5th in the ACC) so far this season and 178 kills, which ranks her 4th in the ACC. She is averaging 3.79 kills per set. She also has 14 blocks on the year. Lauren Woodford plays a role in Syracuse's offensive success, leading the team in assists with 254. She is averaging 5.40 per set and add 77 digs. At the net, Syracuse has 104 total blocks, compared to 91.5 from opponents. Raina Hughes has 45 on the year, averaging .96 per set
 
Home Court Advantage
 
The Hokies are currently 5-0 at home in non-conference play, sweeping both of their preseason tournaments and not dropping a set. Tech is one of three teams who are undefeated at home in the ACC, along with Boston College and Duke.
 
ACC Ranking
 
There are two Hokies ranked statistically in the ACC: Anabel Zier and Maddie Slagle. Zier is ranked sixth in blocks. She has a total of 54 with an average of 1.20 per set. Slagle is also ranked sixth in digs with a total of 179 and an average of 3.81 per set.
 
1,000 Assists
 
Junior Brie Postema has 975 career assists, on pace to reach 1,000 in her career. So far this season, Postema has recorded 127 assists, playing in 33 sets in 2022. Her season-high in assists was set in the win against Clemson, tallying 20 in the win.

The Hokies will welcome NC State and North Carolina to Blacksburg next weekend. Tech will take on NC State on Friday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m., followed by North Carolina on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m.
