BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech football's Dax Hollifield will don the No. 25 jersey on Saturday at North Carolina, after he was told in a team meeting Thursday afternoon.
Hollifield will now wear the iconic number for the third time of his career, placing him tied for third on the all-time list for recipients.
"This place has had a long tradition of great special teams," Hollifield said. "I'm a firm believer that the best players need to play special teams. You see it at the best programs across the country. It's an honor for me to get it the week of UNC, a big rival, with me being from North Carolina, is really special to me."
Hollifield is coming off of a seven-tackle outing against West Virginia, with three of those being solo stops. On the year, the fifth-year senior is tied for first on the team in tackles with defensive back Chamarri Conner (30) and has three TFLs, one sack, two pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
Tech retired Frank Beamer's No. 25 jersey in 2002, and since the start of the 2016 season, the Hokies have been paying homage to Tech's legacy of excellence on special teams by selecting a different special teams athlete each week to wear the honorary Beamer 25 jersey.
