Tech hits the road to face Wake Forest

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women's soccer team will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on Wake Forest on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 5:00 p.m. Sunday's match against Wake Forest will air live on ACC Network Extra. Virginia Tech leads the series against Wake Forest with an away record of 5-4-2.

Rankings Don't Determine Results (7-2-1, 1-1): Virginia Tech upset the #22 NC State Wolfpack on Thursday in Raleigh with a 1-0 victory. Taylor Price banked the game-winning shot versus the Wolfpack with an assist from Natalie Mitchell in the 62nd minute. The Hokies held the shot advantage (21-7) throughout the entire match keeping the Wolfpack down to one shot on goal. Tori Powell led the shot count with five shots, two on goal. Lauren Hargrove blocked the Wolfpacks' single shot on goal to record her fourth clean sheet of the season. 

The Unexpected  (7-1-2, 1-1):  Wake Forest defeated #14 Clemson (4-1) in Winston- Salem on Thursday, claiming their first home conference win of the season. Clemson scored the first match of the game in the 24th minute and held a shot advantage of 14-10. The Demon Deacons immediately answered back with their first goal of the night 12 seconds after Clemson. Wake Forest ended the first half leading 2-1. In the second, the Deacons scored twice ending the game with a score of 4-1. Last Sunday, Wake Forest dropped their lead against NC State 2-1 with two goals by the Wolfpack in the final 13 minutes. 

Strengths: Natalie Mitchell continues to lead the Hokies in shots with 39 in 10 games, tied for fourth in the ACC. Mitchell is also tied for first in assists in the ACC with six assists. Fellow freshman, Taylor Price is tied for third in goals in the conference with six goals this season. Price has scored the first Hokie goal four times this season in the last 10 games.  Wake Forest may not be in the top 10 for shots, goals, or points, but the team is backed by the top-rated goalkeeper in the conference, Kaitlyn Parks. Parks has recorded six shutouts this season with 19 saves. However, Parks has not been faced with as many shots as Lauren Hargrove who has recorded four clean sheets with 28 saves. Hargrove is ranked fifth in the conference for saves, Parks is ninth.  The Deacon Demons are led by junior Liv Stowell with four goals and four assists on the season. 

• Deep into the Net:  Virginia Tech has made 191 shots this season while holding opponents down to 81 shots. Wake Forest has kept their opponents down to 26 shots on goal, but the team has only made 138 shots in 10 games. The Hokies average 19.1 shot per game compared to the Deacons' 13.8.
