Hokie ClubKNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Virginia Tech women's golfer Becca DiNunzio carded a 6-under 207 to tie for seventh and lead the Hokies at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate, Monday-Tuesday, at Cherokee Country Club.
Behind DiNunzio's season-opening top-10, Tech tied for sixth in the team standings with tournament host Tennessee and 2022 national qualifier Michigan. Wake Forest used a final-round, 12-under 272 to claim the team title at 21-under 831, three shots clear of runner-up UCF. Virginia placed third at 16-under 836, followed by Kent State (849) and Michigan State (857).
DiNunzio accumulated 11 birdies and one eagle to tie her career-best, 54-hole ledger of 6-under-par. She fired a 6-under 210 at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational last fall. The Norfolk, Virginia native tied for second in the field in par-4 scoring at 4-under-par.
Making her Tech debut, Morgan Ketchum tied for 18th at even-par 213. The freshman was a model of consistency, carding rounds of 71, 70 and 72.
Symone Henriques tied for 36th at 6-over 219, followed by Ginnie Lee (T55, 224) and Alyssa Montgomery (T61, 227).
Tunrada Piddon of UCF prevailed in the individual race with an 11-under 202 (68-64-70) to edge Rachel Kuehn of Wake Forest and Bailey Davis of Tennessee by a shot.
The Hokies will face a quick turnaround for their next tournament. They return to Blacksburg today before flying out to Oklahoma for the Schooner Fall Classic hosted by the Sooners, Sept. 24-26. The 54-hole event will be played at Belmar Golf Club in Norman, Oklahoma.
